The Journey of Sri M from Mumtaz Ali Khan to a Himalayan Yogi

Early life and spiritual quest

Sri M was born as Mumtaz Ali Khan in a Muslim family in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, in 1949. He was a precocious child who had a keen interest in religion, philosophy and literature. He was also gifted with psychic abilities and had visions of his future guru. He was influenced by various religious traditions, such as Islam, Hinduism, Christianity and Buddhism. He was especially drawn to the teachings of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda and Sri Ramana Maharshi.

He was restless and dissatisfied with the conventional life that his family and society expected him to lead. He felt an inner urge to find a spiritual master who could guide him to the ultimate truth. He ran away from home several times in search of a guru, but returned disappointed. He finally decided to leave for good when he was 19 years old. He boarded a train to Rishikesh, where he hoped to find his master in the Himalayas.

Meeting Babaji and other masters

On his way to Rishikesh, Sri M met a strange man who claimed to know his guru. He followed him to a remote village near Badrinath, where he met Babaji for the first time. Babaji recognized him as his disciple and welcomed him with love. He gave him the name Sri Madhukarnath and initiated him into Kriya Yoga. He also told him that he was the same Babaji who had initiated Lahiri Mahasaya into Kriya Yoga in 1861.

Sri M lived with Babaji for three and a half years, during which he learned many things from him. He also met other great masters who visited Babaji or lived nearby. Some of them were Mahavatar Babaji, the supreme master of all yogis; Neem Karoli Baba, the miracle-working saint who was revered by many Western seekers; Anandamayi Ma, the blissful mother who radiated divine love; Jiddu Krishnamurti, the free thinker who challenged all dogmas; Ramana Maharshi, the sage of Arunachala who taught self-inquiry; Swami Sivananda Saraswati, the founder of Divine Life Society; Swami Rama Tirtha, the poet-saint who spread Vedanta in America; Swami Tapovan Maharaj, the master of Swami Chinmayananda; Swami Yogananda Paramahamsa 71b2f0854b
